Pursue an MBA at your own pace and place with Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School

When Tony Lee decided to pursue a Master of Business Administration (MBA), he specifically sought a programme that would allow him to balance his education with his career. The Flexible MBA programme at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, immediately stood out as the perfect fit.

“The fully online format removes geographic restrictions,” Lee says. The part-time mode of study allows students like him to pursue their MBA in as little as two years, or as many as six. “This is a plus, as it allows me to advance at my own pace.”

Carey’s efforts to design an MBA programme that’s adaptable to the hectic lives of working professionals have paid off. The Flexible MBA was ranked second best online MBA for working professionals by Business Because, and ninth by Forbes for the best online MBAs overall. It’s the best of both worlds for professionals with hectic lives. They don’t have to sacrifice their professional responsibilities, nor do they have to sacrifice the experiential learning and networking opportunities privy to students on campus.

It’s not only customisable when it comes to schedule. Students have the luxury of choosing between eight in-demand specialisations to tailor their learning to the field they’re most interested in. The lineup includes Artificial Intelligence for Business, Business Analytics and Risk Management, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Health Care Management, Leadership, Marketing, and Real Estate.

Lee opted to specialise in AI for Business. Regardless of your chosen field, however, the Flexible MBA programme incorporates courses that prepare graduates to lead the next generation of business. “Courses related to artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science have been incorporated into the programme for its readiness to embrace the future and prepare students for the economy,” he says.

The curriculum ensures students are prepared to spearhead a rapidly changing technological market. They’re guided by dedicated educators who invite creativity and innovation, pushing them to take risks in their learning. Students often customise their schedules with synchronous and asynchronous course options to suit their own commitments. Lee himself found the online lectures to be high quality in delivery, transmitting effective messages about the content. He appreciated that weekly assignments were rigorous in nature, applying theory to practical and current business scenarios.

“With great flexibility, a modern curriculum, and firm support, the programme has represented the actual value of Johns Hopkins for me,” Lee says. “It has helped me gain the competence to be self-assured and prepared for the present fast-evolving technological business environment on a long-term basis.”

Lee is merely one of many Carey students who’ve found themselves ready to dive into the industry with confidence. The results speak for themselves — last year, the Flexible MBA Class of 2024 earned an average base salary of US$150,924. It was reported that 76% of students received a salary increase, while 55% climbed the ranks with a promotion.

Alum Diana Dumitrascu’s draw to the Flexible MBA programme at Carey was the offering of experiential opportunities. It’s yet another reason why this programme is the pinnacle of adaptability. Just because courses are conducted online doesn’t mean learning is limited to a laptop’s perimeters.

“I wanted to build my network and have development experiences that I would not normally have through a corporate job,” Dumitrascu says. “I planned my classes in a way that allowed me to complete all the in-person opportunities.”

The Flexible MBA allows students to participate in opportunities like global immersions, leadership expeditions, and consulting programmes. Dumitrascu took a nine-day trip to Norway for the Leadership Development Expedition, where students tackled challenges in groups and took on leadership roles during a hike through the Norwegian mountains.

For the first time, Dumitrascu realised she held the strength to be a leader.

“This programme made me realise that I have the ability to lead, and that my input is valuable,” she says. “When I returned, I began taking on more leadership opportunities at work. I started contributing more ideas and took ownership of projects.”

It’s hard for students to fully realise their leadership and analytical skills solely through traditional classroom learning — hence Carey’s passion for providing students a gateway to real-world learning. LDE Norway isn’t the only experiential journey Dumitrascu’s been on. She travelled to the Galápagos Islands for the project-based Innovation for Humanity course, where students developed a business plan incorporating the concepts taught in MBA courses to serve underserved communities. It’s allowed her to build globalised skills, and a network of contacts she otherwise wouldn’t have.

“These opportunities are so valuable,” she says. “Once you graduate, these opportunities are gone. That’s why it’s so important to take advantage of them while you’re in the programme.”
