Bridge business and STEM with an MS degree from Johns Hopkins University

One could say Yendry Ventura’s journey to the top of Abu Dhabi’s healthcare innovation scene can be traced back to a passion rooted in his genetics. Growing up in Cuba, he was influenced by his mother’s impactful career in humanitarian work, which inspired him to pursue medicine in her honour. Over time, his growing interest in the business side of healthcare motivated him to further shape his career with a master’s degree.

Enter Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, based out of two dynamic cities: Baltimore, Maryland and Washington, DC. Here, he’d find his calling amongst Carey’s vast catalogue of rigorous, analytics-driven Master of Science (MS) programmes – all of which are designed to evolve students into future-focused innovators.

“My degree in Health Care Management from Johns Hopkins University has been pivotal in my success, providing me with the knowledge and skills to navigate and excel in the healthcare and business landscape,” Ventura says.

Ventura’s career success mirrors that of many Johns Hopkins graduates –– its alumni network leads across industries today. He’s the CEO of the Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre, and an adjunct professor at the United Arab Emirates University. He’s working to build a healthier future, serving as the principal investigator behind several clinical trials using stem cells to find cures for diseases like cancer and diabetes.

Students at Carey, an institution renowned for its research and innovation, have the opportunity to conduct interdisciplinary research alongside experts in fields such as medicine, public health, engineering, and artificial intelligence. For Ventura, this exposure was fundamental to his career growth.

“It empowered me to take on leadership roles and drive innovation in health care delivery and research. The knowledge I’ve gained, along with the insights from my professors, has empowered me to take the leap into launching my own business and becoming an entrepreneur,” he says.

It’s wholly possible to achieve Ventura’s height of success when equipped with a 21st century MS programme –– one that nurtures the data, technology, and industry-specific expertise vital to solving complex business challenges. These degrees not only bring you analytical rigour and real-world opportunities, but four are STEM-designed too, which means international students receive an extended Optional Practical Training (OPT) period after graduation.

Faculty members are world-class researchers who deliver specialised knowledge key to shaping the future. They lead programmes that cover Business Analytics and Artificial Intelligence, Finance, Health Care Management, Information Systems and Artificial Intelligence for Business, Marketing, and Real Estate and Infrastructure.

In any given programme, you’ll land in the thick of a global community. Greg Koory, an MS in Real Estate and Infrastructure graduate, recalls the diverse range of professional backgrounds students came from — accounting, government, finance, architecture, and engineering, you name it. That makes for a dynamic learning experience. Koory says, “The students all bring their experience into the classroom, and it heightens the classroom discussion.”

However, horizons are not just broadened in the classroom. What makes the experience truly valuable is the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to real-world situations. Indeed, Carey’s commitment to hands-on learning sets it apart. Through opportunities like consulting projects, case competitions, and employer partnerships, students gain competitive industry skills.

They can get involved with the Community Consulting Lab, and refine their consulting skills by serving businesses in the greater Baltimore and Washington metropolitan area, helping them improve their business strategy. Case competitions allow them to network with top executives and exercise their critical thinking and presentation skills. In February, five Carey students won first place at the Washington, DC-Baltimore area CFA Institute Research Challenge and advanced to the sub-regional round — this was Carey’s sixth win in the last eight competitions.

“The hands-on learning from professors with real industry experience gave me the practical skills to stand out in my career, ultimately helping me become the youngest Human Resources Director at Neusoft Group,” says Teng Xinyang, an MS in Marketing graduate. “The programme’s focus on agile learning, innovation, and presentation skills has been key in my success, from leading AI-driven HR initiatives to speaking in front of thousands of people.”
