Johns Hopkins Carey Business School: An in-depth, cutting-edge MS programme for artificial intelligence

When McKinsey & Company surveyed 1,900 IT and business executives from seven countries, 63% of leaders deemed AI as “very” or “critically” important to their business success — and that number was predicted to grow to 81% in the next two years.

For graduates in business, it ups the ante in what employers are looking for in their hires. Tech and AI skills are in-demand, with two-thirds of business leaders stating they would not hire someone without them, according to the 2024 Work Trend Index Annual Report from Microsoft and LinkedIn.

In the US, the Baltimore-Washington D.C. metro is one of the top 10 AI hubs in the nation, according to Forbes, with employers in the region being known for hiring AI professionals. If you’re eager to keep pace with how fast it’s developing, there’s a business school right in the heart the innovation: Johns Hopkins Carey School of Business.

“I strengthened my technical skills such as Python and machine learning while simultaneously gaining knowledge on the business side of organisations at Carey,” says Tanush Sharanarthi, who graduated from what was once called the MS in Information Systems programme. “The professors and career team helped me prepare to face various challenges in my career and to tackle them in smart and efficient ways.”

It’s to no one’s surprise that his work paid off. From his bachelor’s degree in , to a master’s at Johns Hopkins, to landing a sought-after role as an AI engineer in Silicon Valley, his trajectory’s only going up from here. The best part is that his journey isn’t exclusive — 100% of Carey’s part-time MS students from India find employment in the US within 90 days of graduation.

    Here’s why.

    In-depth AI courses

There’s lots to learn, lots of skills to master when building a strong foundation in the field of AI. That’s why Carey has designed the MS in Information Systems and Artificial Intelligence for Business programme — to help you gain cutting-edge, problem-solving AI strategies through an in-depth, STEM-designated curriculum.

Spanning one year of full-time study, the programme comprises 24 credits of required courses and 12 credits of optional electives. Courses — such as AI Essentials for Business, Cyber Networks: Securing the Digital Frontier, Machine Learning: Design and Deployment, Generative AI, and Data Science and Business Intelligence – are comprehensive and in-depth. You will also gain expertise in cloud computing, cybersecurity, data science, and IT management – by some of the most respected names in academia and industry.

The MS takes place in Carey’s state-of-the-art building in the heart of Washington D.C., led by faculty members combating algorithmic biases within medical apps that aggravate systemic racism in healthcare, rethinking entrepreneurial strategies to bring business innovation to impoverished communities, reducing peak energy demand and usage through new mathematical models, and so much more.

    From classroom to real life

In 2017, Carey achieved a feat that less than 5% of business schools around the world have managed to do — receive accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. It’s a recognition that only goes to the best of the best, the innovators and the impact makers.

With an MS curriculum that’s enriched by experiential learning, Carey graduates surpass that standard. Learning by doing is an integral facet to the Carey journey. They take on consulting projects at the Community Consulting Lab, an eight-week hands-on programme where students work and strategise with local business owners and entrepreneurs. They complete hands-on projects within Carey’s collaborative research centres, and walk away with first-place awards at regional case competitions.

    A career set to thrive

Within 90 days of graduation from this Johns Hopkins master’s programme, 100% of part-time students from India land a US role. “My degree from Carey has profoundly influenced my career, equipping me with a strategic blend of technical and leadership skills that are essential in today’s AI-driven landscape,” graduate Tianli Xu says. From Shanghai to Washington, D.C., Xu upped his skills as a full stack developer, migrating his already-thriving career in China to a full-time position at Johns Hopkins University.

As a STEM-designated programme, that pathway is made possible for all graduates. International students can extend their Optional Practical Training period after graduation to remain in the US and work at a full-time job related to their degree. With support from the Career Life & Design team to navigate job searches and professional development, students like Xu and Sharanarthi have gone on to some of the biggest names in the tech and business worlds — think companies like Amazon, Deloitte, JP Morgan Chase, PwC, Microsoft, and more.
